History

At the turn of the 19th and 20th century, there were already fifteen building standing over Štrbské tarn. The settlement Štrbské Pleso had a tourist-spa character. Štrbské Pleso, as climatic spa, experienced an unusual boom and even sport events started to be held here. Already in 1900, there were the European Championships in speed-skating on the frozen tarn and in 1925 the European Championships in ice hockey, which had to be finished in Starý Smokovec due to bad weather, however.

In 1927, the Prague architect Karol Jarolímek designed a project and built a wooden ski jump in the Mlynická valley. Eight years later, the Mlynická valley hosted the World Championships in Nordic skiing which were affected by a strong wind storm, however.

The highlight of all sport events of Štrbské Pleso were the World Championships in Nordic skiing in 1970. On this occasion, there was built the Area of dreams with the hotel FIS, designed by architects - professor Eugen Kramár, a leading personality of the Slovak architecture and Ján Šprlák. After this occasion, other objects based on projects by Eugen Kramár were built as well.

Hotel FIS is thus built in a beautiful environment of Štrbské Pleso, directly under the Tatra peaks of Solisko and Patria. It is named after the international ski federation FIS and is located in the mouth of the Mlynická valley. The hotel was officially launched in 1970 by Mark Hodler, president of the international ski federation at that time, who came to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the hotel opening in 1995 and flew with his own private plane, which surprised all organizers. He was accompanied by the president of the Slovak Olympic Comitee at that time - prof. Černušák and confirmed the name FIS with a valid certificate.
